HINTS ON FINDING A CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIEL

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is probably one of the most charming, loving dogs around. They are a moderately active dog, but are inclined to become couch potatoes, so must be made to exercise daily as they get older.

The Cavalier is a toy spaniel and should be in the size range of 12-18 lbs when adults. They come in four colours: Blenheim (red and white); Tri-colour (white and black on body with tan markings); Ruby and Black & Tan. All colours are equally delightful in temperament.

Cavalier puppies
The Cavalier is a relatively healthy breed. However they are inclined to certain health problems, such as mitral valve disease (heart), luxating patellas, certain type of eye problems. One should always check with the breeder for information regarding health issues.

This breed is easy to care for needing little to no professional grooming, but it should be noted that they do shed.

First decide that this is the breed for you. Check out resources such as books on the Cavalier or check out some of the online sites provided by the various Cavalier King Charles Spaniel clubs worldwide.

Going to a dog show is helpful. This will let you see the breed in person and talk to various breeders.
Talk to professional groomers, boarding kennel operators and veterinarians about your breed choice. Always go to a reputable breeder.

A reputable breeder is usually someone interested in bettering their breed. They are concerned with the soundness, health and temperament of the dogs that they are producing. They will be willing to discuss both the good points and the bad points of the Cavalier with you. They will be willing to spend time answering your questions and concerns both before and after they have sold you a dog. Be prepared to ask questions. Also be prepared for the breeder to want to know about you and your home situation. A conscientious breeder will want to know where their puppy is going.

Be careful of the breeder that has a multitude of breeds available for sale or that breeder that always has a puppy available. Some of the best breeders are those who only have one or two litters a year. These are quite often the breeders that put a lot of time and planning into each litter.

Don't expect to get your puppy that day. It is better to wait for that perfect puppy. Occasionally a reputable breeder may have a puppy available immediately, but that is more luck of the draw. If you are looking for a Cavalier as a pet expect to sign some form of a non-breeding contract or spay/neuter contract. This is fairly standard from the better breeders. Some of the less than ethical breeders may try to sell pet puppies on what is called breeding terms. Before you get involved in this situation be very sure that it is something that you want to do.

Occasionally a reputable breeder will have a nice show puppy that they are unable to keep themselves and will offer it to you. If you are looking for a pet that you do not wish to breed make this very clear to the breeder. A reputable breeder will accomodate you and sell you another puppy or help you find another breeder that has a pet available.
