Cavalier King Charles Spaniels Breed Information and
History
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels in some form may have
existed as early as 1486 as a small ladies spaniel. This breed is mainly
associated with Charles II who was seldom seen without his little spaniels, to
the detriment of his governing as he would rather play with them than pay
attention to his kingly business. Can't say I blame him.
However the
short nosed pug like dogs became popular during the reign of William and Mary
and so the longer nosed Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was abandoned, in favour
of the King Charles Spaniel or English Toy Spaniel with its more domed skull
and shorter nose.
In 1926 the American Roswell Eldridge upon not finding the original
toy spaniel of King Charles II's day offered prize money at Crufts for the
original longer nosed, flatter head spaniel. This encouraged some breeders to
develop the older style dog and in 1928 the Standard was drawn up using Miss
Mostyn Walker's Ann's Son as a template. To differientiate between the King
Charles Spaniel the name Cavalier was used and still is today.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is recognized and is popular world
wide though most recently in the United States where it has gained popular
recognition with the American Kennel Club in recent years, though has been in
existence much longer under the guidance of the members of the Cavalier King
Charles Spaniel Club - USA.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's most
delightful feature is its laid back, happy go lucky, love every one
temperament. They also go under the name of Comforter Spaniel, a name richly
deserved. They come in four colours, Blenheim (chestnut and white), Tri-colour
(3 colours, white and black with tan markings), Ruby (rich red) and Black and
Tan.
They are moderately active, enjoying a good romp and walk with their
owners, but somewhat indolent inside, enjoying the comforts of the sofa to
rough-housing. They are an easy dog to train doing quite well in the obedience
show ring, due in large part to the fact that they are eager to please their
owner.
